Stef Stewart

After 3 months of putting up with severe pain in my lower back and legs, caused by a herniated disc, I first met Mr Ishaque. He was extremely pleasant while giving me the right amount of information and support. We first tried physiotherapy which on this occasion wasn’t successful. After careful consideration Mr Ishaque recommended an injection into the herniated disc. We tried this 3 times because of the success achieved by performing this procedure previously and because Mr Ishaque was determined to not put me through an operation unless absolutely necessary. On each occasion Mr Ishaque and the anaesthetist Dr Da Silva did what they could and again, kept me informed and comfortable throughout each procedure. Unfortunately, the injections for me weren’t successful so Mr Ishaque felt that it was time to go through with the microdiscectomy surgery.

I was advised throughout the procedure itself, of the possible risk and what the recovery looked like. The operation was a breeze and again it really felt that both Mr Ishaque and anaesthetist Dr Da Silva stayed responsible for my recovery until I left the hospital. I feel I recovered too quickly, I was cured after a year of a lot of pain and as the pain had gone completely, apart from the pain from the area affected by surgery, I felt like Superman and tried to do to much too soon. Again at this point and throughout my recovery Mr Ishaque really did care and talked about my ongoing and continual recovery, always thinking long term.

What Mr Ishaque has managed to achieve by performing this surgery is way beyond what I expected that could be achieved. I cannot express enough how comfortable I felt with Mr  Ishaque, Dr Da Silva and the nursing team at the BMI and how focused they were on me. It doesn’t seem a lot but all I feel that I can now do for them, is say a massive thanks.

Professional Memberships

Mr Ishaque is highly experienced and widely recognised as a leading Consultant Spinal Surgeon. He is one of the few surgeons to have been awarded both the British Orthopaedic Association's Robert Jones Gold Medal and a Hunterian Professorship from The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is one of the youngest surgeons to have achieved this, having been awarded both honours, before the age of 40.
