Dr Simon Wharton

MB.BS, BSc, MRCP (London)

Consultant Respiratory and Sleep Physician


Dr Wharton trained in medicine at Guy’s Hospital in London. While studying medicine he also obtained a degree in Sociology and the Philosophy of Science from the University of London. He qualified in 1992 and then trained in Brighton, London and Sheffield before finally undertaking a year's training as a Fellow in Intensive Care at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

He was appointed as consultant physician at Queen’s in Respiratory Medicine and Medical High Dependency in 2000 and worked in Nottingham until 2013. For the first 7 years he was clinical lead for the Medical High Dependency Unit and chair and founder member of the Critical Care Specialist Advisory Group to the British Thoracic Society. After a short sabbatical at Stanford University Sleep Medicine Center in California he developed a strong interest in sleep medicine. This interest culminated in his move from Nottingham to Birmingham to become clinical lead for Sleep Medicine at Heartlands Hospital where he has worked since 2014. He has broad experience in respiratory, critical care and sleep medicine.

His NHS practice is at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham and has clinics at The Priory Hospital Edgbaston and the Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull.

He is a member of the British Thoracic Society and the British Sleep Society and lectures regularly at regional and national level.

Mr Ishaque is highly experienced and widely recognised as a leading Consultant Spinal Surgeon. He is one of the few surgeons to have been awarded both the British Orthopaedic Association's Robert Jones Gold Medal and a Hunterian Professorship from The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is one of the youngest surgeons to have achieved this, having been awarded both honours, before the age of 40.
