Dr Kiran Patel

Dr Kiran PatelDr Kiran Patel graduated from Cambridge University in 1993 and then trained in Cambridge, Bristol and Birmingham. He is now a Consultant Cardiologist at Heart of England NHS Trust in Birmingham and also practices from the BMI Priory Hospital and Spire Little Aston Hospital. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London and the British Cardiovascular Society.

In 2000 he was awarded a PhD for studying the way in which heart cells function and how rhythm disturbances of the heart develop. He has published widely in the field of cardiology, (including 2 books and several book chapters) and has also been involved regionally, nationally and internationally in the development of policies and guidelines in cardiology e.g. NICE guidelines into the management of Chest pain, cardiovascular risk and lipid disorders to name a few.

Kiran is currently also a Medical Director for an Area team in NHS England which carries a significant level of responsibility for ensuring high standards of care. He is the West Midlands representative on the National Clinical Reference group for Complex Invasive Cardiology, amongst several important roles held.

He is a keen sportsman, having played cricket to county standard in the past. He combines his love of sport with an interest in cardiac screening in sport, for both amateur and professional participants. He is a member of the Expert Panel of Cardiologists for the Football Association (FA) where he delivers care and expertise to professional elite and amateur athletes.

His main clinical interests are:

  • Coronary artery disease and cardiovascular risk assessment. He performs cardiac imaging and coronary angiography.
  • Arrhythmias (investigation of symptoms related to palpitations, dizzy spells and blackout) and pacemaker implantation (including implantable defibrillators and pacing for heart failure) - he has performed over 1000 pacemaker implants.
  • Heart failure and the investigation of symptoms related to breathlessness

Together with Mr Ishaque and his team, Dr Patel has seen and treated many cardiac patients and their families, with excellent levels of satisfaction.

Professional Memberships

Mr Ishaque is highly experienced and widely recognised as a leading Consultant Spinal Surgeon. He is one of the few surgeons to have been awarded both the British Orthopaedic Association's Robert Jones Gold Medal and a Hunterian Professorship from The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is one of the youngest surgeons to have achieved this, having been awarded both honours, before the age of 40.
