Dr Egidio Joseph da Silva MBChB, DA, FRCA.
Substantive position: Consultant, Anaesthesia for Adult and Paediatric Spinal deformity and critical care, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital foundation trust, Birmingham, UK
Clinical and research interests: Patient safety, Anaesthesia for spinal surgery (degenerative, deformity and oncology) Critical care and Critical care Outreach, Blood conservation and cell salvage. Awareness and Neurological monitoring, Difficult airway management ( including awake fibreoptic intubation), Acute pain management and perioperative medical care. Total intravenous anaesthesia. One lung ventilation. Medical Education. Anaesthesia of Special needs patients.
Professional affiliations: Royal College of Anaesthetists, General Medical Council, Member of Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, British Medical Association, Medical defence union, European Society of Regional anaesthetists. He is a member of the Council of the British Society of Orthopaedic Anaesthetists.
Dr da Silva trained both in Zimbabwe (University Hospitals, Harare) and England (Wessex and West Midlands rotations). He obtained Fellowship from the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2003 then completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Education of Health professional in 2007 at the University of Birmingham.
Dr da Silva was admitted onto the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council in March 2007. He completed a Fellowship in Neurocritical care/Neuroanaesthesia, Cambridge in 2007. In late 2007, he took up a Consultant post at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham.
In 2012 he was admitted as a council member of the British Society of Orthopaedic Anaesthetists (BSOA).
He held the position of Clinical Director for the Department of Anaesthetics and Critical care from 2014-2016, at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He was elected onto the Executive Committee as the Treasurer for the BSOA in 2016.
Currently he is Perioperative medicine Lead and Difficult airway lead for the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. Both Lead roles are registered with the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
He continues to be involved in patient safety improvement in the centres that he works in.
Current practice: 50% anaesthesia for spine surgery, 10 % Interventional radiology, 25% Anaesthesia for Orthopaedics and oncology and 15% Perioperative medical clinics and high risk consultation. He regularly practices at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, The BMI Priory and The BMI Edgbaston.

He is one of the few surgeons to have been awarded both the British Orthopaedic Association's Robert Jones Gold Medal and a Hunterian Professorship from The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is one of the youngest surgeons to have achieved this, having been awarded both honours, before the age of 40.
